Win Quotient

Okay so what is a person to do when everything seems old and boring, i guess the answer is to combine maths and facts and excel and play with numbers, have started this f1 driver "win sheet", which based upon factors of their formula 1 careers comes up with a number to see how successful they have been, keeping in mind the chances they have had and lost, interestingly its NOT about who has won the most world championships, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy that from the random pick Senna is topping at the moment, BUT we shall see, as i have more free time on my hands, courtesy an event less weekend. Senna trumped by Fangio now.

Races Wins Poles Position Points Win Qoutient
1 Fangio 52 24 29 0.116758242 1.135989011
2 Senna 162 41 65 0.073731139 0.728052127
3 Schum 277 91 68 0.034877657 0.608884877
4 Seb 71 16 22 0.037977867 0.573189135
5 J Stew 100 27 17 0.047873016 0.487873016
6 Prost 202 51 33 0.034467822 0.450309406
7 Hami 80 15 18 0.0275 0.44
8 Hakkinen 165 20 26 0.025487013 0.304274892
9 Alonso 168 27 20 0.023440016 0.303201921
10 Piquet 207 23 24 0.024674279 0.251727419
11 Kimi 157 18 16 0.019805884 0.236366394
12 Massa 144 11 15 0.011582168 0.192137724
13 Kubica 76 1 12 0.008889411 0.179942043
14 G Hill 179 14 13 0.023568649 0.174406638

* Win Quotient = ratio of wins + ratio of poles + position points
* Position Points = ratio of the sum of 1/position achieved in a season for all seasons competed in

Rant: Killing F1

I've tried to stay positive, I've tried to look on the bright side, but that has become excessively hard to to do.  I'm all for innovation and development but not at the cost of the thing loosing its identity. The thing here being F1 of course.  F1 isn't making any sense, they (read either bernie or todt or both) want to decrease rev, they want to decrease the car noise, they want to increase car safety, they want to save fuel consumption but they are okay with half the tyres being wasted and lying around on the track,  they don't want v10, they don't want v8 anymore, they want v6, okay maybe with turbocharging allowed BUT as mentioned before decreasing the allowed rpm, They want to race in Bahrain, even if political atmosphere there is.....well rather dangerous, even if no one turns up to see the friggin race. The whole thing is wreaking of greed and money-lust. This way the only thing left in a few years would be a farce or a race, within guinea pigs going round a circuit just so that networks and bernie can make their cuts.  I'm sad that F1 i know is going to die soonish.

Spot the straight line

Okay spot a straight long enough to allow DRS on this circuit. This is Monaco by the way... and the ban on the use of DRS on it has been lifted, so spot a straight long enough that can be used as over-taking zone.

Kill DRS

Alright a till now nebulous opinion is taking concrete form in the recesses of my mind  which is of-course "CHUCK DRS OUT, NOW!". I was okay with it when no one was really using it BUT after yesterday i am convinced its a cheat, because whats its meant for can actually be done with skill. Drag Reduction System (DRS) is supposed to facilitate overtaking, for more details go through this older post for even more details google. Ok, so where was I? yes, get rid of DRS, It gives an unfair advantage to a car that's behind, while guy in front who's actually worked for that place is supposed to be a vegetable and let the bloke behind him pass. If they are really so concerned about overtaking, KERS would give a fairer boost with good tyres. Rest should be left to skill. Rosberg did it without DRS yesterday on lap 21, when he and Massa were playing "Lets swap places alot". FIA should realize more overtaking does not necessarily translate into more exciting races, people want to see battles and talent, enough of the fakery, I want to see overtaking, loads of it, but done old-style with spunk and skill.

Senna

Sometimes you feel this strange sense of loss for complete strangers. I hadnt been bit by the racing bug when Senna was alive or was too young to bother. Soon enough i heard of this legendary figure who died a tragic death. i searched his races out on video, read of all his rivalries and controversies and i came to understand the lure of this man. He wasn't on the track to do his job, he was there to live, and win and not just to exist. He was electrifying and enigmatic. I wish there was someone like him today, but i guess that is too much too hope, anyone with senna-ish seeds might find what FIA is doing to f1 almost too dull to follow. Cobain's death note wrings true for Senna too. "Its better to burn out than to fade away".

P.S. haven't watched the documentary yet, but have heard good reviews about it, would update some source for it if i find any.

Say NO to Massa bashing

The most successful driver on the Istanbul Park circuit is none other than ..... Felipe Massa, since its inclusion in the f1 championship in 2005 out of 6, Massa has won the race 3 times(2006-2008), But that was then, and with a car quite different to what Ferrari have right now (principle difference being then they had less problems). Lately there has been massive critcism for Massa, which i think is unwarranted, the poor man did quite a reasonable job last year(finished with 144 points :/). Massa came to Ferrari in the wake of one of the best #2 the sport has seen, Rubens Barichello and probably was told that he has to be JUST like Rubens when he grows up and was paired with none other than Schumi. I really don't blame Massa seeming to "passive", Ferrari ofcourse brings all the alpha male #1 of the sport to thier team (Schumi, Kimi, Fatso) so any de-facto #2 assumes this subdued kind of an attitude (specially with team orders being OK now). I still think he's a great driver, not the best but pretty great anyways, and he does his job reasonably well, Though he comes across as the shaky #2 i still think there is some game in him left. I think it might be too much to hope that Massa wins in Istanbul this year as the car is being rather pathetic but I hope that he does something amazingly ....innovative (at least) that shuts up the Massa  bashers for a wee bit.
